Understanding Pip Value in Forex: How to Calculate Your Profit Per Pip

Learn what a pip is, how to calculate pip value for different currency pairs, and why understanding pip value is essential for forex position sizing.

In forex trading, prices move in tiny increments called pips. Understanding how much each pip is worth in your account currency is essential for proper risk management and position sizing. Without knowing your pip value, you can't accurately size your positions or set your stop losses.

What Is a Pip?

A pip (Percentage in Point) is the smallest standard price movement in forex. For most currency pairs, a pip is the fourth decimal place (0.0001). For Japanese Yen pairs, a pip is the second decimal place (0.01).

Example: If EUR/USD moves from 1.1050 to 1.1055, it moved 5 pips. If USD/JPY moves from 150.50 to 150.75, it moved 25 pips.

Calculating Pip Value

The pip value depends on three factors: the currency pair, the lot size, and your account currency.

For pairs where USD is the quote currency (like EUR/USD):

Pip Value = Lot Size × 0.0001

A standard lot (100,000 units): Pip value = $10

A mini lot (10,000 units): Pip value = $1

A micro lot (1,000 units): Pip value = $0.10

Pip Value for Cross Pairs

For pairs where USD is the base currency (like USD/JPY) or for cross pairs (like EUR/GBP), you need to convert:

Pip Value = (Lot Size × Pip Size) / Current Exchange Rate

Example for USD/JPY at 150.00: Pip value for 1 standard lot = (100,000 × 0.01) / 150.00 = $6.67

Using Pip Value for Risk Management

Once you know the pip value, you can precisely calculate position sizes based on your risk parameters:

If you risk 1% of a $10,000 account ($100) and your stop loss is 20 pips away:

Required pip value = $100 / 20 pips = $5 per pip

Position size = $5 / $10 per pip per standard lot = 0.5 standard lots (50,000 units)

Common Pip Values Reference

Here are standard lot pip values for major pairs (approximate):

  • EUR/USD: $10.00 per pip
  • GBP/USD: $10.00 per pip
  • USD/JPY: $6.50-7.00 per pip (varies with rate)
  • USD/CHF: $10.50-11.00 per pip (varies with rate)
  • AUD/USD: $10.00 per pip
  • USD/CAD: $7.00-7.50 per pip (varies with rate)

Pips in Crypto Trading

In cryptocurrency trading, the concept of pips is less standardized. For Bitcoin (BTC), a "pip" often refers to a $1 move ($0.01 for some platforms). For altcoins, it varies based on the price and the exchange's tick size.

When trading crypto, it's more practical to think in terms of percentage moves or dollar amounts rather than pips.
